SALAMIS
The Greek island of Salamis is the largest island in the Saronic Gulf, about 1 nautical mile (2 km) off-coast from Piraeus. Paloukia Port is the main port in size, second only to Piraeus in Greece. Salamis island is known for the great historic event of the Battle of Salamis, where the Greek fleet with small powers but with excellent tactics, defeated the Persian’s Empire powerful fleet. Many historians believe that if the Persians were victorious, the development of Ancient Greece as well as Western civilization would cease and lead to the conclusion that Salamis was one of the most important battles in human history.Salamis is said to be the birthplace of Ajax (the Greek mythology hero) and Euripides (the great tragic poet), the latter’s birth being popularly placed on the day of the Battle of Salamis.
